Who and why did Jobscan exist?
Jobscan was created by James Hu for a simple but crucial purpose: to remove the stress from job hunting. He stated, “I created Jobscan because I was a job seeker and found resume tailoring time-consuming.” The process of reviewing resumes felt like a dark hole. The job search should not be so painful because of the underserved nature of job seekers. Hu created Jobscan to automate a portion of the keyword identification process. How does Jobscan differ from Other Tools?
Other tools, such as Wordle.net or Tagcrowd word cloud generators that can identify the most frequently used words in job descriptions, are also available. Step 1: Scanning your Resume
Go to the Jobscan homepage. Paste your resume and the job posting that interests you in the text boxes. Jobscan will find it easier to extract skills and keywords from job descriptions that are longer.
Click the “Scan” button. Jobscan’s analysis tool instantly scans both the text and generates a match rate for your resume on a scale from 0 to 100.
Step 2: Review the Match Report for Keywords and Skills
Below the overall resume match rate, look at the Keyword and Skills Match Report. Make sure you note the keywords that have been successfully added and those that are missing. The more often a keyword or skill appears, the more weight the Applicant Tracking System will give it.
Step 3: Examine Optimization Suggestions
A Jobscan Match Report provides you with an instant match rate for your resume and also gives you specific resume optimization tips. Some of the optimization tips Jobscan may offer are:
*Explainable measurable results such as “Increased sales of 43% over 18 months” or “Decreased delivery times by 43 hours per week, resulting in savings of $145,000/month.”
*Pay close attention to plurals. Many Applicant Tracking Systems do not consider plural and singular forms of the same word equivalent. Jobscan helps you to identify singular-plural problem points and also offers a “switch” feature that allows you to automatically see how your match rate will change if you use the other word.
*Adhere to “hard skills.” These keywords are important because recruiters are more likely than others to look for resumes that have hard skills. Jobscan will give these keywords greater weight when calculating your resume match rate.
Step 4: Rework the resume
After you have reviewed the entire Match Report, begin to incorporate each type of suggestion: keywords, skills, and optimization. In some cases, you will need to echo the exact job description in your resume. However, it is important not to make your resume sound like you are trying to include as many keywords as possible. Step 5: Recheck Your Resume
Finally, scan your resume again against the detailed job description until you reach a match rate of at least 80%. This match rate will triple your chances of getting an interview.
